October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In 2016 there will be an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women, and 2,600 new cases in men. The high rates of the disease emphasize the importance of prevention for those at risk of developing breast cancer, and accessibility of information for those recently diagnosed.

While we continue to advance research on both the causes and treatment of breast cancer, there are important steps everyone can take to reduce their risk and maintain overall health and wellness.

“Breast cancer is one of every woman’s biggest fears,” said Dr. Marisa Weiss, president and founder of Breastcancer.org. “Yet only 10 percent of breast cancers are due to an inherited genetic abnormality. That means that 90 percent of breast cancers are mostly due to lifestyle and reproductive choices, and environmental exposures. Many of these risk factors can be reduced or avoided.”

She added:

As both a breast oncologist and a breast cancer survivor, I know the devastation of breast cancer and the hard work required to get and stay healthy. But the daily commitment is worth it. Breast health equals your overall health. Breastcancer.org with its prevention channel, Breasthealth.org, is proud to partner with EWG this October.

“Dr. Marisa Weiss is one of my heroes,” said Ken Cook, president and co-founder of EWG. “As we began planning our efforts for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we reached out to Marisa and the amazing teams that run her organizations Breastcancer.org and Breasthealth.org.”

Cook continued:

Tens of millions of people find their way to the resources, common sense, help and advice on Breastcancer.org each year. We are deeply proud that EWG’s healthy living resources have often been featured on Breastcancer.org. Our resources are in line with Marisa’s bedrock commitment to prevention, and promote the best available treatments as the medical community continues to search for cures. We are humbled to be working alongside Marisa, a giant in the field, and the extraordinary teams at Breastcancer.org and Breasthealth.org.

EWG, Breastcancer.org, and Breasthealth.org are proud to present our collaborative education campaign, which provides all women and men with steps they can take to lower their risks of breast cancer and protect their breast health. Each week we will tackle a new topic, including personal care, cleaning, nutrition and exercise, and offer plenty of tips that everyone can use. By making a few essential changes and taking control of the environment we create for ourselves, we can eliminate a significant number of exposures to toxic chemicals, fill our bodies with power-packed foods and maintain lifestyles that are protective not only of breast health, but of our overall health and wellness.
