Sun-safe and sound: EWG Verified® sunscreens under $20

Protecting yourself from the sun is one of the most important things you can do for your skin’s appearance and health at any age. This summer, consider investing in your health by choosing from our list of EWG Verified® sunscreen products under $20.

Experts and influencers alike recommend wearing sunscreen every day you plan to be outside. Not only can the right one dramatically reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, it can also protect your skin from premature aging. But some sun protection factor, or SPF, products don’t provide effective protection and other sunscreens may contain ingredients of concern.

The EWG Verified mark makes it easier to find the best sunscreen for you. It’s the gold standard, given to products that have been reviewed by our scientists and meet the highest standards of ingredient safety, transparency and efficacy.

The products below show that safeguarding your skin under the sun doesn’t need to come with a high price tag, as these EWG Verified products are all available for under $20 on Amazon.

Toxic additives

Our 2024 Guide to Sunscreens found that only one in four SPF products provides effective protection from the sun’s rays. Many contain potentially harmful ingredients.

Some sun care products contain chemicals like oxybenzone, which the skin can absorb in significant amounts and which behaves like a hormone disruptor. A 2017 systematic review of 23 studies reported evidence of an association between oxybenzone exposure and harm to the reproductive system, including birth outcomes.

Other products contain ingredients such as fragrance which could cause an allergic reaction.

Finding the right sunscreen

Your vacation plans can also influence your search for the ideal sunscreen. A traditional lotion might be best for regular daily use or when you're lounging on the beach. But for swimming or hiking, consider a product that’s designed to be sweat or water resistant. And lotions and sticks are always recommended over sprays.

On the go, use our Healthy Living app to scan products and find out their hazard ratings. Or look through our Guide to Sunscreens to see how your favorite product rates.

Remember sunscreen is only one tool to protect yourself from the sun. Cover exposed skin with loose-fitting clothing, wear sunglasses, and find or create shade. Make sure to reapply sunscreen generously and regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
